Notes

  • Almost everyone has heard of Bloody Mary. Perhaps you may have heard a different version to someone else, but the general idea is the same. She is said to be a witch who was burned at the stake. Or a virgin abandoned on her wedding night. Or perhaps she is royalty. Or poor Mary Worth who was disfigured in a car accident.

  • You have to chant her name three times, or a hundred times, or thirteen times, or chant her name backwards. It’s impossible to know what you are meant to do as there are so many variations. In some you are supposed to stand in front of a mirror with a candle, in others, a dark room. Sometimes the candle has to be a particular colour. Some legends state that it only works on one night of the year.

  • Once young women were told to walk backwards up the stairs while holding a candle and a hand mirror in an unlit house. As they looked into the mirror, they might see the face of their future husband, or the face of the Grim Reaper. The latter indicating that they would die before they married. Cheerful.

  • She is said to have a tenuous connection to Queen Mary I.

  • Sometimes she is a dead girl, other times a ghost. Sometimes she is covered in blood and other times not. Others say she is the devil come to steal your soul. Others have said that she is you from another dimension and you open a portal between worlds.

  • Depending on the legend, she might scratch out your eyes, pull you through the mirror, steal your soul, strangle you, drink your blood or many other things. It is also said that if you do the ritual correctly then you may ask her one question, to which she is compelled to answer truthfully. It doesn’t say whether she scratches your eyes out afterwards though.

  • It is said that you should never complete the ritual in your own home. Even after she has appeared once she will continue to haunt the mirror and travel between other mirrors in the house, watching and waiting for an opportunity to do harm. She can return to any mirror in which she has ever been summoned, even if you do not do the summoning.

  • It is said to escape her wrath you can confuse her by dressing identically in a white dress, smearing blood over your face and wearing a black wig.

  • To escape her you can break the mirror. Depending on the legend, she will either be lost forever in a world beyond this one, or she will be free to crawl out and party at your place. Anyone who has seen the Supernatural episode will probably want to avoid this course of action.

  • She is said by some to be sympathetic to virgins, or brides. In other legends those two things can make her even angrier. All seem to agree that mocking her in any way is a bad idea.

  • Oh and the worst part? It is said by some that if you are in an unlit room near a mirror, she can come for you anyway, even if you don’t call her. As I am typing this, I am sat in a dark room opposite a mirror. If I never blog again, you’ll know why.

  • Similar to the legend of Hanako-San.

  • Similar to the legend of Blue Baby Blue.

Equipment

  • Just your bad self and a mirror.

Steps

  • Stand in front of a mirror in a dark room.

  • Say ‘Bloody Mary,’ 13 times.

  • Mary will appear. Depending on the version she may answer a question, scratch out your eyes, possess you or a number of other awful things. Have fun.
