How to Play

Notes

  • Credit goes to Reddit.
  • The OP describes this as very high risk. It can lead to permanent haunting, physical scarring, mental scarring, headaches, leg cramps, heart attacks and death.
  • OnanH states, “Wings of a Celestial is not your typical ‘scary party game,’ the consequences are very big and very real. The ritual was used by many, in many ways, but, the most known by wiccans who wished to end their lives inconspicuously. Now it is more commonly used to attempt to gain the ever wished for immortality.” In short, what you get from the ritual depends on the wish of the one performing it.
  • Some of the instructions are rather vague, but I have posted what there is. There is no information on what to expect once the ritual is over.

Equipment

  • A sharpie.
  • A friend.
  • Chalk.

Steps

  • Take a sharpie and draw a pair of angel wings on your body with a few stray stars in the middle. The wings can be anywhere on your body. This is where your scar will be after the ritual is over.
  • On the night of the full moon, go outside.
  • Stare at a single star. This will be your celestial.
  • While you look at the star, have a friend draw seventeen chalk circles around your body. There is no information as to whether these circles should interlock or be whole circles.
  • Repeat out loud, ‘I see, I do, I plead, you may look into my deepest darkest memories and see what I really truly intend to do here.’ You should feel a chill, you must continue to look at the star without looking away.
  • Cross your fingers over your heart.
  • Walk forward and smile at your star.
  • Go to bed.

Safety first

This is one ritual that almost everyone seems to consider especially dangerous.

Risk level

Very high. I think the main risk factor is that the instructions are very vague, so you are at risk of doing something incorrectly and as a consequence, changing or perverting the ritual into something else. You have no real idea who or what you are summoning. There is no information about what will happen after you complete the ritual either, so you cannot prepare in advance.

Would I play?

No.

How to Play

Notes

  • This is a psychological ritual similar to some I have previously posted; Doors to the Mind and In The Eye of the Giant.
  • Originates from a Native American ritual.
  • You should have a clean body for this ritual, so bathe and avoid alchol and drugs for a while beforehand.
  • Your power object should be should be something very familiar to you that will help you snap out of a trance like state. It could be a childhood toy, a photo of someone important to you, or anything along those lines.

Equipment

  • 2 candles.
  • A lighter/matches.
  • 4 mirrors, ideally full length.
  • 2 chairs.
  • 1 power object.
  • 1 mobile phone/cell phone.
  • 1 mobile phone/cell phone charger.
  • A notebook/sketchbook (if you are more artistic).
  • A compass.

Steps

  • You will need a windowless room, or a room in which all windows have been covered. The idea behind this is that this ritual uses sensory deprivation.
  • Using the compass, set one of the four mirrors at each of the four corners (North, East, South and West).
  • You will be sitting on one of the chairs. Place it facing whichever of the four corners that you feel the most drawn to. The second chair should be placed in the opposite direction, facing the opposite corner. So your chair will be facing a mirror and the other chair will be behind you when you sit down, facing the opposite mirror.
  • Place one candle in front of your chair and the other in front of the second chair. This should create opposing light sources.
  • Put your notebook/sketchbook in front of you, with the pen/pencil nearer to the mirror. Your power object should be placed close to you.
  • Consider what you hope you get from this ritual; advice, understanding, self awareness. Once you have decided this, write it down on a piece of paper.
  • Turn off as many electronic devices and outside sources of light as you can.
  • Once you have fixed what you are searching for in your mind, go to bed.
  • Put your mobile phone/cell phone onto charge and place it beside you.
  • Set an alarm for exactly 02:58. You need to ensure you get exactly three hours of sleep. Set another alarm for 07:00. Go to sleep with the question fixed firmly in your mind.
  • When you are woken by your alarm, use the light from your mobile/cellphone to find your way back to the room where your ritual is set up.
  • If anything has changed in that room then do not proceed. Go to another room and wait until your next alarm goes off at 07:00.
  • If all is as it should be, sit in your chair and pick up your notepad/sketchbook. Light the candle that is in front of you. From now on this is your light source, don’t use your phone.
  • Without blinking, gaze into the mirror in front of you. Think about what you want to know and concentrate as you continue staring into the mirror. Your goal is to reach what scientists call Hypnopompia, the moment before Lucid Dreaming. This might take some practice.
  • Do not, at any point, look into any of the other mirrors. There is nothing to say what will happen, but the OP’s grandmother said it is a very bad idea. If you accidentally do so, leave the room immediately, closing the door behind you.
  • Breathe in slowly and then exhale. Continue meditating on whatever you are seeking. When you feel it is time, pick up the notepad/sketchbook and begin writing or drawing. You will know when.
  • Leave the room when the 07:00 alarm sounds. Do not remain in the room past 07:15. You may leave early if what you see or feel disturbs you.
  • You may need to do this several times until you reach the proper state for it to work.

Safety first

As with any of these games that promise greater self awareness, it is worth  bearing in mind that it can leave us feeling vulnerable or unhappy. This game is what you make of it, so if you are in a negative place, it may be worth trying something else.

Risk level

Low. It isn’t a summoning ritual. Being surrounded by four mirrors might not be a good thing if you haven’t started that diet you’ve been thinking about for six months though – personal experience.

Would I play?

Probably.

How to Play

Notes

  • Credit goes to Augur-Jearn of Reddit.
  • The idea behind this ritual is to summon what the OP calls a Servitor.
  • Remember, according to myth, naming something gives it power.
  • Note that the OP states that you may come up with a name, only for this ritual not to work, or for it not to feel right. The way the ritual reads, it is almost as though you are supposed to have a name pop into your head that will just feel right to you. You shouldn’t be thinking too hard about it.
  • Although this ritual seems to claim that you should be able to create something yourself, several parts of it are similar to older rituals that are intended to call upon things already out there. The idea is that you name these formless entities, giving them power and in doing so, can bind them to you, but only for a time. The more people that know of said entity, the more powerful it would become, which might be why you are never supposed to share the name with anyone else.

Equipment

  • A notebook.
  • Pen/pencil.
  • A sterile needle.

Steps

  • You must pick a name for your Servitor. The name should then be reversed. So if your chosen name is Billy Bob, then your Servitor would be Bob Yllib, which as we will all agree, is a spiffing name for a demonic best buddy. Remove the vowels from the name.
  • You must remember the name, but do not keep it written down anywhere. You should also design a shape that will represent your new friend.
  • Following this you should focus on this shape, meditate upon it as frequently as possible. Your thoughts should either bring this thing into life, or allow something already in existence to come through to our world using your will. You should be patient with this part.
  • When you feel that you have allowed enough time for your Servitor to take shape, so to speak, then you are ready to move onto the next phase.
  • Fill your sink with water.
  • Prick your finger and allow drops of blood to fall into the water. Blood magick would indicate that the more blood you give the entity, the more bound to you it will be – however, it could also mean that said entity becomes more powerful than you would like.
  • Draw your symbol on a piece of paper and drop it into the the bloody water. Just think, you could be watching Jessica Jones right now (it’s good). Get it wet enough for the paper to dissolve, or be ripped into pieces small enough to go down the drain. Note, I accept no liability for either demonic entities, or plumbing issues following this.
  • Say aloud, ‘This signifies our friendship [Bb Yllb, or whatever your Servitor’s name is]. You are now bound to me by my sigil, doused in my blood.’
  • Remove the plug (that came out as pug then, remove any small dogs too) and allow the water, plus paper to flow out. As it does, say, ‘Our friendship has transcended into the spirit world! I declare again that you are bound to me by blood and sigil.’
  • Turn off all lights and leave all doors standing open (except your front and back door). You must now leave your house for at least ten minutes. It would be very dangerous to remain.
  • Once you return to the house, you should feel a subtle difference. Now you have brought your Servitor forth, it requires a shape. For the next month you should meditate on how your Servitor would look. Perhaps it is a cat, Angelina Jolie, a pocket watch. Whatever does it for you, no judgement.
  • As time goes on you should start to notice subtle attempts at contact. The more powerful the Servitor, the less subtle these will be. You may now begin to talk to it and meditate upon whatever you want its help with.
  • If time has passed and nothing is happening, but you feel the name was correct, the OP offers the following advice. Get an item, anything really, and have it serve as your Servitor’s vessel. Create another sigil on paper and burn it. Place the ashes into the vessel. This should help.
  • The OP says that you will need to feed your Servitor from time to time. The Servitor will let you know what it wants. You may not like what it asks for. But if you do not feed it then it may break free of you.

Safety first

Usual stuff about randomly stabbing yourself with needles and why that isn’t a great idea.

Risk level

High. I have said on this blog several times that while I am a skeptic, I do not advise using blood magick in any form. Games like this can have a psychological impact on people and there are a lot  of stories out there about what has happened following one of these sort of games involving blood. This could play on your mind. As always, it is your choice. You’re an awesome badass and I’m not the boss of you (except you, Chris. I am totally the boss of you).

Would I play?

No.

How to Play

Notes

  • Credit goes to ScaryforKids and MissCocoa.
  • The game originated in Japan and involves summoning a mysterious figure. No one knows who this figure is or what their intentions are – pretty much par for the course with this sort of game.
  • Once you start playing, you cannot stop.
  • You must ensure that candles are placed, lit and extinguished in the exact order given. If you change anything you could summon another entity entirely, or the game will not work.
  • You must make sure that the mirrors are not exposed to daylight during the game, hence the dusk to dawn rule. If you can ensure complete darkness then you can play during the day.
  • Others may play this game with you, but they cannot leave the room once you start.
  • Do not allow yourself to view your own face in the mirror for the duration of the game.
  • Once the game is over, you must bury the candles and paper. You may also want to dispose of the mirrors given their propensity for acting as spirit portals.

Equipment

  • A sheet of paper.
  • Scissors.
  • Red lipstick/red lipliner.
  • Five candles.
  • Two mirrors.
  • A lighter/matches.

Steps

  • The game must be played between dusk and dawn.
  • Using all of your amazing art skills, cut the piece of paper into the shape of a paper man. Using the red lipliner, draw a line on the back of the paper man. On the left hand side write your own name in full. On the right hand side you should write ‘Rubeus’ (latin for red).
  • Place the two mirrors so that they face each other, leaving a small gap between them.
  • With the lipstick, draw two red eyes on the left hand mirror – they should be drawn in the center of the top half of the mirror.
  • Your paper man should be placed in between the two mirrors. The red eyed mirror should be to his left and the other to his right.
  • The candles should now be placed around the paper man in the style of a clock, with his head pointing at twelve o clock and his legs pointing to six. The first candle should be placed at twelve o clock, the second at two, third at five, the fourth at seven and the fifth at ten.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Light the candles in the following order: 7, 12, 5, 10, 2.
  • Cut the paper man in half.
  • The left half of your paper man should be moved closer to the left hand mirror and the right hand side closer to the right hand mirror (who would have thought?!?). Both halves should remain within the candle circle.
  • Close your eyes and repeat six times: ‘Please come, please come. I will not move until you come.’
  • Extinguish the candles in the following order: 12, 7, 2, 10, 5.
  • The Red Man should now appear.

Safety first

Usual stuff about stumbling around in the dark and summoning Darth Maul lookalikes – haven’t you seen Insidious?

Risk level

High. Assuming this does work, you don’t know what you are summoning and why. Any kind of summoning ritual usually involves some sort of deal, or the expectation of such.

Would I play?

No.

How to Play

Notes

  • Credit goes to Scary for Kids and also to MissCocoa who alerted me to this game. Original source can be found here.
  • The idea behind this game is to complete a ritual to cleanse yourself of grief/sorrow or emotional pain. This may help some people, but I should warn that you cannot expect games to help with serious emotional issues and instead you should consider therapy or some other suitable coping mechanism. I am extremely wary of posting games and people expecting it as some magic cure all for something serious, so bear that in mind.

Equipment

  • You, yourself and I.

Steps

  • You need to locate an abandoned house that has a room with a locked red door. If the house doesn’t have one, move on, this isn’t the house for you. Plenty of fish/houses in the sea, or whatever. This seems to be one of those games that implies if it is the time to play it, things will work out.
  • Knock twice on the locked door and then attempt to open it. If it remains locked, abandon the game, go get some nachos, because there is always time for nachos. If however it opens then you should enter.
  • Within will be a windowless room with a single bed in its centre. The bed should have red sheets.
  • If all is as detailed above then you now have to make a choice whether to continue or leave. If you wish to leave you may do so now without experiencing any ill effects, but you may never return to the house.
  • If you choose to continue then you should lie down upon it on top of the sheets. When you are ready, close your eyes and wait. You must remain motionless and keep your eyes closed during whatever happens next.
  • Eventually any activity will cease and you should hear a voice whisper, ‘it is done.’
  • As soon as you hear these words you should get up and leave the room, closing the door behind you without looking back or speaking.
  • Should you encounter any sort of figure in red on your journey home, do not interact with it and run home as fast as you can. If the figure is in white then do not run, but instead proceed home at a brisk walking pace.
  • Go to bed immediately and sleep.
  • If these steps have been done correctly, you should feel better for up to seven days. If you have not completed these steps correctly then you may feel worse and will continue to do so until the ritual is properly completed. However, the next time you return to the house, the red door may not be so easily found.

Safety first

If breaking and entering then make sure you remember your striped shirt and your SWAG bag.

Risk level

Aside from the risk of being arrested, or potentially encouraging someone squatting in the property, there is also the issue I raised above. Games can be fun, but they are no substitute for many other ways of dealing with serious grief or emotional pain.

Would I play?

Probably not.

How to: Ouija

How To: Ouija

When readers email me, one of the most common questions asked is how to use an Ouija board. I am not a fan of abstinence only teaching on any subject, so I decided that it might be about time to start a how to series, so that those who choose to do certain things have an idea about what they are doing. So far I intend to cover things like Tarot, Scrying and Smudging – if you have any requests/suggestions then please let me know.

History

There is a great article about the history of the ouija board here.

How to make one

There are a billion videos and articles out there on how to make an Ouija board. Some people fashion theirs out of paper or cardboard, although wood is the recommended material.

You can find a Wiki How article here.

Original guidelines

Here are the original guidelines which came on the back of one of the first Ouija boards.

Modern guidelines

Almost everyone interested in the supernatural has an opinion on how you should use an Ouija board, or in fact whether you should use one at all. As always with this blog, I leave the final decision to you. Be aware that although it is marketed as a game, many people believe it is extremely dangerous to invite a random spirit into your home. Even if you intend to call on someone in particular, you are never sure exactly who you are talking to and spirits lie, deceive and can attempt to trick you.

Below are a few of the general rules about using an Ouija board.

  • Safe space: It is important to create a safe space away from the Ouija board.
    • Most people recommend a salt circle in the corner of the play room that you can retreat to if things go wrong, or someone becomes frightened. You should keep salt with you to close the door in said salt circle once you have all entered. Don’t make a salt circle around you and the board.
    • If you intend to keep the board I suggest sprinkling a line of salt around the Ouija board after playing to trap any lingering spirits inside.
  • When/when not to play:
    • Never use during a thunderstorm or on a day when the spirit world is especially strong (Midsummer, Halloween etc).
    • Don’t play in a cemetery or church/holy place.
    • Never use when you are somehow impaired: drunk, ill or grief stricken as it leaves you very vulnerable.
    • Do not play alone.
    • Never play in a room where you intend to sleep afterwards. If you become nervous after playing, before you sleep place a salt line across any potential entrances to your room (remember mirrors). This will protect you.
    • Never speak out loud the name of any spirit or entity contacted during the session. Never tell the spirit your name, the names of anyone else present or your location.
  • How to play:
    • People suggest sitting on the floor, cross legged with knees touching. The idea is to keep the spirit contained. If someone breaks the circle, for whatever reason, move to your safe space.
    • One person should ask the questions, so it may be useful to decide them in advance.
    • When you begin, gently move the planchette in a clockwise direction around the board (this is supposed to warm it up).
    • To end the session, immediately move the planchette to ‘goodbye’. Even if you are upset/scared/bored/convinced it’s all a pile of crap, always end the session properly by saying goodbye and moving your planchette to the goodbye area before removing your fingers.
    • If you suspect you have contacted an unpleasant entity then you should destroy the board by covering it with a salt, basil mix/holy water if you believe and bury the pieces in the earth – NEVER BURN IT.
    • Prevent the planchette from falling away from the board – either you will lose connection with the spirit, or it may be able to escape.
    • It is recommended that a silver coin is placed on the board while playing – silver is known to repel evil.
    • Don’t let the spirit control the session. Always be firm, but respectful.
    • Don’t play in a room with dolls, or other objects that could be possessed. Avoid having animals in the same room wherever possible.
  • Conduct:
    • Always be polite.
    • Never ask for physical proof.
    • If you contact a negative spirit, immediately end the session.
    • Never ask the spirit about God, the Devil, Angels or the afterlife. Don’t ask about your own death – no one needs to know that and they’ll probably lie anyway.
    • Don’t ask the spirit for a favour.
    • Don’t ask the spirit how they died. It’s rude.
  • Warnings:
    • Most important of all, if anyone playing becomes upset or uncomfortable, end the session immediately. Be considerate.
    • If the planchette moves to the four corners of the board, end the session immediately.
    • If the planchette begins spinning in a figure of 8, end the session.
    • If it begins to count down through the numbers, or backwards through the alphabet, end the session.
    • If the planchette begins to spin counter-clockwise, end the session.
    • Never make an ouija board out of a mirror, or play within arms reach of one. Never play near standing pools of water.

Final Notes.

Lastly, although people suggest making your board out of wood and using it whenever you like, I would always suggest destroying your board after each session. You are creating a portal and then establishing a connection with someone or something – once they have come through once it becomes easier each time and spirits become more powerful the longer they are summoned. I also recommend disposing of the silver coin at the end of the session, even though it is said to repel evil, any objects associated with the game are best destroyed in the appropriate way to avoid establishing a permanent connection to a particular spirit.

Also, remember that playing these sort of games can upset some people. If you suspect someone is vulnerable, try to persuade them to avoid the Ouija board altogether.

Even if something does happen, spirits lie and manipulate and so don’t believe anything they tell you. They may promise things or threaten things, but you should always remain in control of the session and end it as soon as things become uncomfortable.

Your First Test Game

How to Play

Notes

  • Originated here.
  • Read the instructions start to finish before deciding whether you want to play. It is important to understand what you are risking.
  • OP states that ‘Above all else, you must concentrate, must focus. You must not allow yourself the self-indulgence of thinking about what you’re doing, Such reflection will wake the logic we’ve cultivated as a species to banish the darker realities, and after all, we’re not interested in logic; it’s magic we’re after here, aren’t we? Magick is belief} not ritual. Ritual is nothing without belief. It is the belief that matters, the font from which the magick shall flow into this tiny container we’ll soon build.’
  • The idea behind this ritual is to summon back a friend you had in childhood, the one that no one else could see and who you forgot as you grew older and put aside childish things (or just moved them to the attic). Perhaps you remember them now as you read this, perhaps not, that doesn’t matter: we all have one.

Equipment

  • A space to play.

Steps

  • Find a space where you can sit comfortably for a long period. There should be at least an arms length of space between you and any walls or windows/mirrors. You should not be able to see a mirror or highly reflective surface from your seated position.
  • When you are ready, turn off the lights and close the door.
  • Recite this poem, ‘my oldest friend, so long ignored. Come back to me from the night’s dark shore. My invitation I now renew, that I might spend the night with you.’ Repeat and establish a rhythm. Continue until you sense a change in the room. OP states that it could be ‘almost anything: breathing besides your own, a drop in the temperature, creaking floor boards.’
  • Once you realise you are not alone you must remain quiet and still. Most commonly it will be behind you. Never turn to look at it. It will try many things to get you to look at it, but you must resist. If you look at it then you are lost. Continue to repeat, ‘ask and I shall answer.’
  • It may take minutes or hours, but it will eventually ask its riddle. You have until dawn to answer, if you fail, you can never play this game again. From then on you will need to sleep with the lights on. They don’t like the light.
  • If you answer correctly then you will be set a task. Do not move until you are certain it has gone.
  • The task will be difficult and will take you outside of your comfort zone, but you have unlimited chances to complete it.
  • If you have managed to complete the task, congratulations, that was the first test. Your friend will soon come again and this time, without being called.

Safety first

Friends take time and effort. Remember their birthdays.

Risk level

Moderate.

Would I play?
